Would it make a difference if I chewed and swallowed the tablet rather than just letting it dissolve?

Why are these not recommended in pregnancy? I just bought them from my chemist and the person did not make me aware that they shouldn't be used in pregnancy even though I told them it was to be used in pregnancy.
